Experts available to media for presidential debate analysis

As Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump take to the stage Monday evening in the first presidential candidate debate, Penn State political science and security experts will be watching along with the rest of the general public, and they’ll be availably immediately afterward to give their analysis to media. Debate topics include “America’s direction,” “achieving prosperity” and “securing America.”

Penn State experts are available to comment on the debate:

Dennis Jett, professor of international affairs

Jett can speak to the topic of securing America. He is a former American ambassador who joined the School of International Affairs after a career in the U.S. Foreign Service that spanned twenty-eight years and three continents. Anne McKenna, visiting assistant professor of law

McKenna is available to talk about key cyber, social media, electronic privacy and email issues in the Presidential Election. She is a nationally recognized trial attorney and author in cyber, privacy, electronic surveillance and cellular law. Robert Speel, associate professor of political science

Robert Speel

Speel can speak generally about the debate and historical moments in past presidential debates. He recently wrote an article about the five key debate moments that altered the course of a presidential race.

His teaching and research interests include elections and voting behavior, state and urban politics, Congress and the Presidency, and public policy. He is the author of “Changing Patterns of Voting in the Northern United States,” about the creation of the regional divide of Red States and Blue States in the United States. WPSU, McCourtney Institute announce debate for U.S. Senate candidates

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — WPSU Penn State and the McCourtney Institute for Democracy at Penn State will hold a forum for the candidates for the Pennsylvania Democratic U.S. Senate primary. This 60-minute event will be held at 8 p.m. on April 9 at the WPSU studios at Innovation Park. The forum will include all candidates polling above 5 percent in the March 24 Franklin and Marshall poll. A list of participants will be available after March 24.

The forum will broadcast live on WPSU-TV, as well as WVIA-TV (Scranton), WITF-TV (Harrisburg), WQED-TV (Pittsburgh), WQLN-TV (Erie) and WLVT-TV (Bethlehem). WHYY-TV (Philadelphia) will also broadcast the event at a later date.

The audience is by invitation only, but the debate will also be streamed live at wpsu.org/live.

The format for the debate was developed jointly by senior scholars in the McCourtney Institute for Democracy, the production team at WPSU and Penn State students. Veteran WPSU Penn State host Patty Satalia will moderate the discussion that will focus on the concerns of college students and other young Pennsylvanians. Students will be invited to submit and ask questions of the candidates.
